In 1971, the engineer Alfons LOWENGERG dream of creating a standard VW SPORT.
1972: A variant of the engine of the Audi 80 1.6 L (85CV type 827) is designed to fuel the new "Volkswagen", the engine delivers 70 hp.
March 1973: LOWENGERG and his colleagues in the development of VW SPORT. This development is out of work at VW.
This year, the Scirocco gets the 1.6 L Audi engine of 85 HP. In parallel, Löwenberg also manufactures a prototype with the VW engine, but prepared for developed 100 hp.

In February 1981, several changes occur:
- Inside, a new dashboard, new steering wheel, new fabrics "rainbow" as well as a new shifter.
- On the outside, the rear lights are larger.

- Version "GL" to "CL"

In summer 1982, the Golf GTI gets a 1800cm3 engine that goes up power to 112 bhp (9 Cv).
- Inside: An onboard computer provides time, average speed, outside temperature, oil temperature.
- On the outside: "1800" is added after the monogram Golf GTI and a rear fog light allows the Golf to be seen in case of bad weather (provided it is followed).
The price rises to 61,900 F for 2 doors and vesrion 64 000 F for 4-door version coming out that year.
The year 1983 was marked by the arrival of new models Special:

Note that the German version of the GTI "Plus" is the GTI "PIRELLI" and the Swiss version is the GTI "TROPHY".
The "PIRELLI" is produced from May 11, 1983 to October 7, 1983.
The characteristics of the PIRELLI GOLF are:
- PIRELLI rims in 6 x 14 (9 identified by "P")
- 4-spoke steering wheel is adorned with leather GTI.
- Bumpers, mirrors and the fender flares are painted the same color as standard.
- Passenger mirror with a convex mirror is adjustable from the inside.
- The grille is fitted with original fog lights 2 extra.
- The windows tinted in green.
It is available in white, red, green or blue lhasa helios Metallic.
Optional:
- Alu wheels PIRELLI 5.5 X 15.
- The sunroof.
- 4-door version.
- Radio.
- Lava-headlights.
- Color: gray diamonds, gray altlas, pink pearl, diamond platinum (gold), green oak (very dark green), anthracite, copper, diamond and two kinds of black.
For colors above, bumpers, mirrors and élargissseurs are not painted in the same tone.
On the other hand, no model has been sold with the bumpers painted in two colors, as was shown in catalogs PIRELLI period!.
Level price, "PIRELLI" is sold in 20 285 DM 2 doors and 20 980 DM 4 doors. DM 354 extra to get the colors green or blue Helios Lhasa and 634 DM for the other special colors.
VW had planned to build in 6500 PIRELLI 2 doors and 4 doors in 4000, but due to demand 50,000 were manufactured.
The most requested color was white, followed by red and green Lhasa. Today, a blue golf Helios is highly sought after because of weak demand at the time. Apparently no Golf Pink Pearl was sold ... A check?
